No-Sway, No-Hassle Features

Bike strap rack carriers do not require a rack, are easy to install and offer easy access to bikes. This makes them common, especially with new cyclists and families, but they can also be one of the least stable and awkward options on the road, sometimes leading to bike-on-bike and bike-to-vehicle contact and presenting problems with parking. The Thule Passage 3-Bike Strap Rack Carrier does away with these issues with its no-sway, no hassle usability. It quickly secures to trunk and/or hatchback seams with multiple straps just like other carriers in its class, but also contains unique setup features. The first of these is a wing adjustment knob and FitDial combo with recommended numerical positions for specific vehicles. This limits the trial and error in how the carrier should lay against your vehicle. Once this optimal fit position is confirmed it is locked into place with easy to turn wing adjustment knobs. Then there is the one-button connection feature for carrier arms, allowing for instantaneous installation, removal and maneuvering of the arms down and out of the way for parking situations with the carrier on, but empty of bikes. It also features narrow cradle arms, capable of holding a wider range of bike frames including smaller child frames. Most impressive though is the no sway cage feature. Attaching and extending below each of the rubberized cradles that support your bike frame and attach to the carrier arms, no sway attachments dramatically reduce bike frame movement front-to-back and side-to-side.

About Thule

Thule was founded in 1942 by the Thulin family, when Eric Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a pike trap he designed and began to sell in Scandinavia. It wasn't long before he added other practical items to the company's portfolio. By the 1960s, the company began to concentrate on car-related products, including its first roof rack. The Thulin family sold Thule to the publicly listed company Eldon in 1979, and it has continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions ever since. The Thule Group is a world leader in providing transport solutions for an active life.

I've owned this bike rack for approximately a month now and I am very happy with my purchase. Thule is a great product and I'm very happy that I purchased this bike rack. It's very easy to install and fits practically all makes and models of cars. The manual did not recommend the bike rack for my boyfriend's 2001 Ford Taurus, but it fit fine and we were comfortable with traveling with the bike rack on his car. We only checked to see if the car would fit my car before we purchased the bike rack, but everything worked out fine. I really like the material, sturdyness, and overall quality of this product.

I've read that someone or a few people weren't able to fit three bikes on this rack. We have 2 adult bikes and 1 children's bicycle and all three of the bikes fit fine. We've also traveled with 3 adult bikes and the fit was good as well. Just make sure you read the instructions and tips that come with the bike rack and you should have no problems.

Set up was easy enough. Used the correct settings and mounted two bikes: both were kids bikes, both were heavy. But around 200 miles into the trip (bad traffic), we very luckily noticed that the bikes seemed way off center.

We pulled over. One of the arms had come undone from the elbow of the rack. The elbow that holds in the arm (which holds the bikes) is the most important part of the rack. The elbow had actually split and when it started to split there was enough give so that the pin mechanism that holds the arm in place popped out. When you purchase this rack, look at the pin mechanism. You will notice it is made of very flimsy material and the squeeze construction seems shoddy. It's the kind of pin mechanism that weight traning equipment uses, but weight training equipment manufacturers always use reinforced heavy steel pins. Why in the world these pins are so flimsy I will never understand. I am sure most of these units are fine and I am sure we got a bad... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars good carrier, July 6, 2008

July 6, 2008

The Thule model is well made, has sturdy straps with good buckles and an easy way of tying down to the trunk sides and bottom. I use it for a 27 lb bike and a 37 lb three wheel recumbent. The rubber saddles and straps are good. For my heavy recumbent bike I had to place hose clamps on the bars to prevent the saddles from moving. The bars holding the bikes can be rotated down for storage but with a little difficulty in pressing the two buttons to release the arms.

I bought the three bike unit because it has a higher listed weight capacity but I suspect it is the same product as the two bike unit but with longer bars.

The saddles and straps save time. I no longer need to spend much time using bungee cords. It is important to get the trunk side and bottom straps snug so they don't loosen on the road.
I called Thule and got an answer to my question about the height of the assembly.

This is a good product and I am glad I... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Universal Rack, March 13, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Saris Bones RS 3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack (Sports)
I purchased this rack to haul my bike around. I drive a Cadillac CTS-v. The rack works as Saris markets. I have not hauled three bikes but have done two. No problems what so ever. The rack secures nicely to my trunk lid. The fit is a little awkward as the suction cup brace things don't fit well on the edge of my trunk lid BUT the rack still secures nicely - doesn't move around, doesn't damage the pain, doesn't bend or scratch the trunk lid.

One thing that was not mentioned in the instructions is the fact that the front wheel kind of swings (from the unrestricted turning of the bars and wheel) back and forth in the wind. I used a small bungee cord to tie the front wheel to the rack. This isn't a big deal and the wheel wasn't turning back and forth to much but I simply want everything solidly attached and not moving. Plus if for some reason my skewer decided to vibrate loose and let my $400 front wheel fall from the bike, the bungee will hold on to it. - probably a... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Bike Rack, July 13, 2010
By
T. B. Ray (Wilmington, DE) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Saris Bones RS 3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack (Sports)
I bought the Bones RS for use on my 2003 Subaru Legacy Outback Wagon. I recently completed a 1200 mile trip with two bikes on the back of my car using this rack and the rack was on as tight at the end of the trip as it was when I started out. I would say this rack is as stable and sturdy as any trailer hitch type rack but costs only half as much.

I have previously owned both Thule and Yakima racks and found neither would stay securely mounted to the back of my car. The problems with these racks was that because of the design of the rear of the Subaru, either the ends of the bent metal grips at the ends of the straps weren't sufficiently long enough to securely grip the car (Thule) or the nylon straps and buckles would not maintain tension (Yakima) and in both cases the racks would inevitably loosen up after several miles of driving. I considered installing a receiver and hitch type rack, but it would have cost me $500 and if I sold the car I would have to pay again to... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and convenient bike rack, May 21, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Saris Bones RS 3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack (Sports)
I've been using this rack for a few weeks now, and I really like it. The initial set-up took a little while, mostly because the fit guide is online, rather than in the instructions, so we had to guess a little bit to set it in the right notch for my Saab 9-3. But after that it's very easy to install and remove from the car. It's also very stable and the bikes are very secure. I love the feature that locks the rack to the car - I don't know of any other bike rack that does that. So if you have a cable lock, you can also lock your bike to the bike rack to deter theft. All in all I'm very pleased with this purchase.
