Extend the Functionality of Your Thule 916XTR T2 Hitch Rack
Although the ability to carry two bikes is good - four bikes is sometimes simply better, and better yet is the ability to choose between one or the other in a single rack configuration, depending on the number of bikes on hand. This is just what the Thule 918XTR provides. Perfect for growing families and/or ride coordinators who have a varying number or companions from ride to ride, the Thule 918XTR T2 2-Inch Receiver 2-Bike Add-on Hitch Rack is designed for cyclists/drivers who already own and enjoy the functionality of their Thule 916XTR T2 2-Bike Platform Hitch Rack, but want to extend their carrying capacity to four bikes.

The thule 918XTR is a seamless add-on, allowing for all the functionality of the base Thule 916XTR T2 hitch rack. This includes: quick-loading bike trays; SecureHook ratcheting technology that secures bikes to trays via independent heavy-duty foldable support arms that clamp down on front wheels; adjustable rear wheel straps that hold the rear of bikes to the tray; tilt down functionality -- even when loaded -- for rear vehicle access; and the ability to fold up all four bike trays towards the vehicle when not loaded.
Easy Modular Installation
The 918XTR T2's modular design ensures easy installation and removal as the number of riders changes. To install simply insert the 2-inch backbone add-on assembly of the 918XTR T2 inline with that of your existing and installed 916XTR T2 rack, and tighten. (The 918XTR T2 is only compatible with the 2-inch hitch configuration of the Thule 916XTR T2 carrier.) The longer platform created allows for the mounting of the two bike tray assemblies -- each with independent SecureHook support arms -- that are provided. Only minimal tools and measuring equipment are required for spacing and installation of trays. Once this has been done, owners can also utilize the retractable locks that attach bikes to the ratcheting heads of the SecureHook support arms, to provide protection against bike theft when away from your loaded vehicle. This is a significant security upgrade from the earlier 918XT T2 model.

About Thule
Thule was founded in 1942 by the Thulin family, when Eric Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a pike trap he designed and began to sell in Scandinavia. It wasn't long before he added other practical items to the company's portfolio. By the 1960s, the company began to concentrate on car-related products, including its first roof rack. The Thulin family sold Thule to the publicly listed company Eldon in 1979, and it has continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions ever since. The Thule Group is a world leader in providing transport solutions for an active life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful Worked well, Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Thule 918XTR T2 Add-on for 916CTR Hitch Bike Rack (2") (Sports) The very first use was to travel over 800 miles in heavy traffic and back-up. The Thule 918XTR 2 Bike add-on was attached to the 916XTR 2 Bike rack to make a four bike platform. It performed very well. Carried the maximum four bikes on the entire trip with no problem. Just a minor issue of having same size bikes next to each other (they were touching), but that was easily solved by rearranging the bikes. The rack stayed securely attached to the truck, the add-on stayed securely attached to the original 2 Bike rack. The bikes did not touch and they stayed secured throughout the entire trip. The rack was easy to assemble and it took no time at all. One of the locks came with one key instead of two. Just discovering some rust on different areas of the rack now (especially the rear wheel strap pins and clips). Hopefully this will not eventually compromise the rack. A little on the heavy side, the tilt function lever was a little hard to engage/disengage, but the tilt function worked well... Read more Works as advertised, but not very secure, By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Thule 918XTR T2 Add-on for 916CTR Hitch Bike Rack (2") (Sports) This is the perfect add-on to the 916 to go from 2 to 4 bikes. The rack gets a little heavy to lift and lower, which attests to it's strength. As with the 916 I like the bike sitting in a cradle on it's tires instead of hanging from the frame, and the on/off is fast and easy.It is also easy to pull off when you only need 2 bikes, but that is also a problem I'd like fixed. 2 bolts undo the 918 from the 916 with no way to lock, so anyone with a wrench can take the frame and anything on it. I'd never leave a bike for an extended time like overnight, but would still prefer a lock on it just like the 916 locks to the hitch. Great product buy adds HEFT!, By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Thule 918XTR T2 Add-on for 916CTR Hitch Bike Rack (2") (Sports) I bought this to (obviously) extend our existing Thule bike-tray hitch-mounted carrier so we could cart an additional 2 bikes of friends around with us.I have to admit to being a bit surprised at just so much heft this adds to the 2-bike rack. Adding this just makes it a bit unwieldy - it's taller so it blocks more view behind you, when you have it down and hauling 4 bikes, it's a bit more like dragging a trailer behind you, etc. No way around that, it's still a great product in that it keeps you from having to lift bike frames up onto small hooks and securing them, but just be aware of the size. I'm a 6'5", 240lb guy and I find it unwieldly to maneuver on-and-off the car, and even dropping down or locking in its upright position, in its full 4-bike configuration - I don't think this is something that a slighter person would find any easier. Also, they changed the locking mechanism for the individual bikes - a cable now pulls out the top and wraps... Read more |
